The 'Russian Plague' Is Potentially Connected to a Kremlin 'Bioweapons Program', Expert Claims

Redfield's suspicion has intensified scrutiny of a mysterious death in Siberia, while the WHO says key questions remain unanswered (Credit: PHOTO: SHEALA_CRAIGHEAD/WIKIMEDIA COMMONS)

The unexplained death of a laboratory worker in Siberia has drawn fresh scrutiny after former US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) director Robert Redfield suggested that the case could be connected to a biological weapons programme. Darya Shipilova, 28, died on 2 October 2026 after being hospitalised with severe pneumonia on 29 September. The World Health Organization (WHO) has not confirmed the cause of her death or established any link to biological weapons.

Russian authorities conducted an epidemiological investigation and placed identified contacts under medical observation, according to information provided to the WHO. They reported that tests had not detected plague or other high-threat pathogens included in the investigation. They also said that investigations found no laboratory biosafety or biosecurity incident. The cause of Shipilova's illness remains undetermined.
