Sunday rugby news as three stars set to quit Welsh rugby in stark new warning for game from leading boss

Here are the rugby headlines on Saturday March 5.

Young confirms Evans and others to go

Cardiff boss David Young confirmed star fly-half Jarrod Evans will leave at the end of the season and warned two other key men are also set to depart the Arms Park.

Evans is wanted by English giants Harlequins, where he would team up with England No.10 ace Marcus Smith.

But Young also says injured duo Willis Halaholo and Dmitri Arhip may also leave amid the current financial crisis in the Welsh game.

Cardiff cannot compete with the money on offer for home-grown Evans in England, the BBC reporting that Young said after the Saturday night home loss to Ulster: "I can't tell you where Jarrod is going, that's his business, but I can tell you we can't put a competitive offer on the table anywhere near the offers he's had.

"So we're pretty much feeling that he is leaving unfortunately which is really sad, when you think that he's been here since he was 14.

"I think in his heart of hearts he doesn't want to leave, but at the end of the day he's got to do what he thinks is the right thing and I support him personally in that decision."

With Rhys Priestland also going it leaves Cardiff with a fly-half crisis, Young saying: "We haven't got any to be honest. We're in the market place looking for replacements, as we are for a number of positions."

Evans has won eight caps for Wales and his departure from the Welsh game means he will be ineligible for the World Cup under the WRU's new 25-cap selection ruling.

Of Wales centre Halaholo and prop Arhip, who have Achilles problems, Young said: "If we haven't got money to have competitive offers for Jarrod, why would we have the money for Willis and Dmitiri?

"I don't know if they'll be our players next year. They knew the decision the club had made before their injuries."

New blow as Cardiff play-off hopes virtually over

David Young refused to blame the off field trauma for Cardiff seeing their United Rugby Championship play-off hopes virtually ended by their home loss to Ulster.

The visitors ran in six tries in total, replacement hooker Tom Stewart collecting two of them, as they claimed a 42-20 victory in the Welsh capital.

The result means Ulster remain on course for a home quarter-final with the bonus-point win but Cardiff's top eight prospects look slim.

"I don't think we can use what's been going on off the field as an excuse. Maybe it was a factor but we saw what a top three side looked like," said Young of the game.

"They were better than us in every area . They were full of size, power and pace and we just couldn't handle it. We're nowhere near a top three side at the moment."

Walker reveals WRU details

Nigel Walker says the full panel for an independent taskforce which is investigating allegations of misogyny and sexism within the Welsh Rugby Union will be announced imminently.

The panel is being chaired by former court of appeal judge Dame Anne Rafferty and will investigate culture and behaviour at the WRU, how comfortable staff are at raising concerns of challenging inappropriate behaviour, and the effectiveness of their whistleblowing procedures.

Interim WRU chief executive Walker says the full panel will be revealed shortly.

"Dame Anne Rafferty has been in the seat for a couple of weeks," he said. "There is one additional panel member, and we are waiting for the third to be confirmed. That doesn't mean work isn't going on, they are looking at documents, and we would hope to announce the full panel in the coming days."

The WRU have also called an extraordinary general meeting for the end of this month where they hope to push through significant changes to their governance.

"There's a recognition across the entire game in Wales that governance changes are required," said Walker. "The current board recognises they are required. We've been out to all bar one of the districts explaining those changes, and the support for those governance changes have been overwhelmingly positive.

"Nobody is taking anything for granted and on March 26 we need to make sure people vote the right way and that those governance changes actually come about."

Lawrence ready for more Six Nations joy after Wales try

Ollie Lawrence has only recently emerged from one dark place but against France next Saturday he will willingly hurl himself into another.

Three rounds into the Six Nations and Lawrence stands out as one of its most destructive carriers, with only England team-mate Ellis Genge proving more effective in crossing the gainline.

After years of searching for an alternative to Manu Tuilagi for the role of for tackle-busting centre, marauding displays against Italy and Wales indicate Lawrence may be the answer for England.

The 23-year-old made his Test debut under Eddie Jones but was marginalised after failing to convince the Australian and upon recovering from a recurring calf injury, his club Worcester went into administration.

But revitalised by his October move to Bath, a player who was not in Steve Borthwick's initial Six Nations squad is taking the tournament by storm.

Tough assignments against France at Twickenham and Ireland in Dublin across the final two rounds ramp up the competition, forcing Lawrence to look inwards for the inspiration needed to run into brick walls.

"Whenever you play against these top teams it requires you go to another level and find that dark place within yourself to get through it," he said.

"You definitely need to find that dark place for carrying. Sometimes you see people in front of you and think, 'this isn't going to be too pretty!'. But if you think about it in the grand scheme of things - and not in that moment - getting that quick ball can relay into having some sort of counter on the opposite side of the field in a couple of phases' time. One action leads to the other."

Lawrence scored England's final try which sealed a 20-10 win over Wales, condemning Warren Gatland's side to a wooden spoon decider with Italy in Rome this coming Saturday.
