Sunday rugby headlines as injured Josh Adams becomes Wales worry and Scarlets talisman 'doesn't look great'

Your rugby morning headlines for Sunday, April 3.

Josh Adams suffers knee ligament injury

Wales international Josh Adams has suffered knee ligament injury, casting doubt over the end of his season and possibly Wales' summer tour to South Africa.

The lethal finisher suffered the injury late on in Cardiff's 35-20 defeat to the Scarlets last night. After carrying into contact, he stayed down as play moved on and looked in considerable discomfort. He tried to play on and looked distraught as he hobbled from the field with the help of a physio.

Cardiff boss Dai Young hoped the injury wasn't serious and described it as 'a little bit of a media ligament strain' but the extent of it will not be known until he gets a scan.

Losing Adams would be a huge blow to Cardiff and Wales boss Wayne Pivac will also be eagerly awaiting the scan results with a daunting summer tour looming.

Meanwhile, James Ratti was described as 'a little bit sore' after coming off in the first half and Gwilym Bradley was 'fine' after leaving the field for HIA following a heavy collision with Sione Kalamafoni, which resulted in the Scarlets No.8 receiving a red card.

Scott Williams injury 'doesn't look great'

Scarlets centre Scott Williams is facing another spell on the sidelines, with boss Dwayne Peel striking a cautious tone over a shoulder injury his man suffered on Saturday night.

Williams was forced from the field late in the first half after injuring his shoulder while reaching out in an attempt to score a try.

After the match, Peel revealed Williams didn't have much movement in the joint and that the outlook wasn't great.

"He's got a sore shoulder and it doesn't look great from where he is now. He's not got very much movement in it," he said.

"I think it'll settle down in the next 48 hours, we'll get him scanned at the start of the week and then we'll see where we're at with it.

"Obviously it's disappointing for him because he's been excellent, as everyone knows. It was just when he was reaching out for that try. He was millimetres short.

"It's too early to tell, it doesn't look great at the minute, but we'll see."

Young hopes Kalamafoni avoids long ban

Cardiff boss Dai Young hopes Scarlets No.8 Sione Kalamafoni avoids a lengthy ban for his red card during last night's derby match.

Kalamafoni will be up in front of a disciplinary panel this week after he was sent off in the 44th minute of the match for a high tackle on Gwilym Bradley.

It was a significant collision with both players going at full speed, although camera angles shown inside the stadium felt a little obscured. However referee Tual Trainini was confident he'd seen clear head contact and sent the home back-rower to the changing rooms.

If anything, it seemed to galvanise the home players and crowd and Dwayne Peel's side finished stronger but they now risk losing a key player for a chunk of their run-in.

Young said: "Obviously we know that there is never any intent in these things. Things happen so quickly but by the letter of the law it's probably a red card. Nobody wants to see people getting red cards, he's not a dirty player and hopefully he doesn't get a long ban.

"But you see them every game now, those type of tackles unfortunately do get a red card."

Kalamafoni is likely looking at a six-week entry point for the offence, which will likely be at least halved for a previous clean record and provided he admits to foul play.

Scarlets boss Peel refused to comment.

Yellow card decision branded 'absolute joke'

Premier Sports pundit and former Ulster player Stephen Ferris has branded a decision during his old side's loss to the Bulls as 'an absolute joke'.

Kieran Treadwell was shown a yellow card for what was deemed a dangerous tackle with the Bulls leading by four points at the time. Play had moved on from the incident but TMO Marius Jonker called it back and the yellow was shown.

Ulster went on to lose the match 34-16.

“It’s an absolute joke. It’s a complete joke… you cannot freeze frame it,” Ferris explained on Premier Sports.

“Kieran Travel hits the ball with his shoulder. When he hits the ball with the shoulder, there is a little bit of head movement. You can clearly see, it’s on the ball.

“If anything, his face brushes the jersey. There is no direct impact to the head, none whatsoever.

“You can freeze frame all you want, but play it in real time. For me, that isn’t even a penalty.

“Yes, a couple of inches higher it is a really dangerous tackle, and that’s what we are trying to get away from.

“But Bobby, if this is going to be yellow cards going forward…. and you know what, what happens two minutes afterward? Maul try, and for me that was the game.”

Fellow pundit and former Springbok Bobby Skinstad was similarly annoyed with the decision, saying TMO Jonker had 'absolutely no place getting involved there'.
