Sunbed wars step up as staff remove towels from poolside beds at top Tenerife hotel

It's been a long-running joke which has annoyed many holidaymakers for years - the race for the poolside sunbed. But now one hotel appears to have taken action against people who secure their prime location sunbed but then leave it empty all day.

Staff at a five-star Tenerife hotel have been seen collecting up towels and possessions from empty beds. They then left notes behind to explain where people could collect their items.

In scenes captured on film by one holidaymaker workers were recorded as they walked around laden with towels and other property. And the move by the Gran Costa Adeje Hotel in South Tenerife appears to have met with approval from many other guests.

Holidaymaker Amanda Proctor filmed the staff removing the towels and bags before leaving notes explaining where they could be collected from. She told how there was a sign at the hotel telling holidaymakers they could not reserve sunbeds before 10am, reports The Mirror.

In the footage one member of hotel staff can be seen with more than 10 towels over his shoulder. A hotel guest appears to run over to the staff members to ask them to leave his towel on the lounger while it was being removed.

But welcoming the move one user commented: "It's the ones who reserve poolside who don't show up until 4pm". Proctor replied: "Exactly. I was lying there thinking … go on! They took their bags, towels and everything left a note on the sun lounger where to collect."

She said it was 'absolutely hilarious' watching people come back to find their towels removed from the sun loungers. She said many of those affected did not return until mid-afternoon.

Another user urged more hotels to adopt the policy, making the competition for sunbeds determined by who arrives first. One TikTok commenter said they'd visited a hotel where sun lounger reservations were connected to rooms, meaning there was no need to compete with fellow guests.

The long-running sunbed wars were highlighted afresh last week when a different TikTok user captured the bizarre habit on camera and shared the footage online. Social media user, Julie Marie Larsson, captioned the video: “Holidays in Spain. Sun bed wars at 6am.”

In the clip, the pool area of a hotel could be seen covered in dozens of sun loungers. Guests in shorts and t-shirts could be seen sprint walking across the decking to place their towels on their preferred beds. With a catchy tune playing in the background people ran down the steps to throw their beach towels on the seats closest to the pool or bar.
