Emergency visits by American children in suicide-related crisis rose 74 percent between 2016 and 2022, and about half of those visits happened at hospitals that see relatively few children in a year.
That pairing is the finding that matters most for families. A new analysis from researchers at Northwestern University and Ann and Robert H. Lurie Children's Hospital of Chicago, published September 3 in Annals of Emergency Medicine, represented more than 5 million pediatric emergency department visits for mental health concerns over the six-year period.
