Suede Review: Fans 'were thrilled after a stellar performance by the band'

"Hopefully we’ll see you again…it’s a long way to the top of the ladder but we’re going to climb it."

So says Crushed Kid’s Brett Anderson at the end of a pulsating gig at Moth Club, a tiny, east London venue which is packed to the seams.

Ok, well it’s not really Crushed Kid, but indie heroes Suede who are playing their highly-anticipated new album Autofiction under an assumed name.

Given the amount of hardcore Suede fans in the 300-capacity room, the secret had clearly got out.

And they were not left disappointed after a stellar performance by the band, spearheaded by Brett himself who is at his captivating, writhing best.

You can’t take your eyes off him. He expends so much energy, his crisp, white shirt is almost translucent, and his hair slick with sweat, just a few songs in.

The new album is not yet out, but the singles off it - She Still Leads Me and 15 Again - are already instant classics. The crowd know every word…sparking a love-in between them and Brett when he introduces the anthemic What Am I Without You?

"This next song is quite special,” he says. "I wrote it about you. It's a love song to the audience. What am I without you? I am nothing without you.”

Closing the set with the riotously-received Turn Off Your Brain And Yell, Brett said: “We have been Crushed Kid. You have been amazing.”

The feeling was very much mutual.
