Sudan violence continues for fifth day with death toll passing 270 as rival forces clash

Violence has spilled into its fifth day in Sudan due to fighting between forces loyal to rival generals after an internationally brokered truce fell apart. It comes after months of escalating tensions between the generals and military unrest after an October 2021 military coup.

The UN said the death toll during clashes between the armed forces and a paramilitary group has risen to at least 270 since the violence erupted over the weekend. Sustained gunfire, artillery attacks and air strikes rocked the capital Khartoum and the city of Omdurman across the Nile River. Residents reported clashes around the military headquarters and near the international airport.
