'Subway has taken it too far', shoppers say as ‘disgusting' sandwich hits stores

Sandwich chain Subway has added a new sub to their menu for a limited time only and foodies are not happy. The fast food chain is known for its wide variety of fillings that you can choose from, but no one saw this ingredient being added to the menu.

Subway has come out with a controversial and strange creation just in time for Easter, and it’s going to be super hard to get your hands on.

The Creme Egg Melt is a 6-inch sub chocked full with the Easter treats, toasted until the gooey insides have melted.

It is extremely exclusive however and is only available for one day. The melt will be available Good Friday (April 7), to just 500 customers - and it’s completely free.

To make it even harder to get your hands on, it’s only available in four stores across the UK - Liverpool, Swansea, Glasgow and London. However, maybe its ultra-exclusivity isn’t a bad thing as many shoppers aren’t eager to test out the Easter treat.

Taking to Twitter, foodies were horrified by festive offer, with some hoping it was a very late April fools joke.

“This is the grossest thing Subway has ever done and that’s saying a lot,” @BeauBennett19 tweeted/

@defnoodles said: “This better be an April Fools joke.”

Twitter user @zburnham781 said: “We as a civilization need to step back and ask ourselves if we've gone too far,” while @WallyThaGreat simply added “disgusting.”

Some fans came to the defence of the Easter sub, with @LisaMayOfficial saying: “I’m sorry but I kinda want it lol” and @2PickNeedham tweeting: “Looks like melted chocolate on bread, I see no problems.”

Rusty Warren, senior NPD and product innovation manager at Subway, said: "We're delighted to have collaborated with Cadbury this Easter. Our Italian White Bread and Cadbury Creme Eggs make the most flavoursome combination - a perfect seasonal treat!

"All the team at Subway are especially excited to see how those Subway fans with a sweet tooth respond to this delicious SubMelt."

Charlotte Docker, brand executive for Cadbury Creme Egg, said: "When Subway approached us to create this eggs-traordinary Submelt, we simply couldn't resist! The highly-anticipated Creme Egg season is in full swing and we’re so excited to launch this innovative product with Subway as a final hoorah of the season.

"We can't wait for the response of those lucky enough to try this surprisingly delicious merging of sweet and savoury."
