Substantial cash boost for charities thanks to successful rotary classic car event

The Rotary Club of Perth has handed over cheques totalling £25,000 to two vital charities following a classic car event.

The Perth club joined forces with Blairgowrie Rotary Club recently to organise the Perthshire Classic Car Tour 2022 in April as a charitable fundraiser.

And president Joe Cairns was delighted to hand over £12,500 each to Prostate Scotland and MND charity, My Name’5 Doddie Foundation.

Bill McDonald, who headed up the Rotary team organising this event, said: “We had 87 classic cars taking part including their Royal Highnesses, the Duke of Kent and his brother, Prince Michael of Kent.

“It was a wonderful day of fun, fellowship and fundraising and thanks to the generosity of participants and our sponsors, a total of £28,500 was raised.

“We are delighted to be able to support these two underfunded charities, with the balance of the funds going to local charities in Perth, Blairgowrie and Crieff.”

Morag Idan of Prostate Scotland said: “This is a fantastic donation and will make a significant difference to our work”.

And Rachel Sharp of My Name’5 Doddie Foundation added: “This is an incredible amount of money to raise.

“We 100 per cent believe that MND isn’t incurable, it is just underfunded and Rotary are helping us turn that dream into a hopeful reality.”

At the event on April 24 this year, an impressive line-up of classic cars assembled at McDiarmid Park, home of St Johnstone Football Club, from 7.30am.

Then provost of Perth and Kinross, Dennis Melloy and Rotary Club of Perth president, Joe Cairns, flagged the drivers off for the beginning of their adventure.

There was an opportunity for spectators to view the cars and watch them depart the stadium, before journeying north through rural Perthshire along the banks of Loch Tay.

It was then time to meander through the scenic Glencoe region to the Isles of Glencoe Hotel, where the cars stopped for lunch and, in some cases, a refill of petrol.

The return route was south through Glencoe, along Loch Earn and through Comrie before finishing at Crieff Hydro Hotel.
