Stunned ITV Good Morning Britain viewers wonder if Richard Madeley's gone 'off-script' as he fires question at John Barrowman

Good Morning Britain viewers were taken aback as Richard Madeley got stuck straight in to an interview with John Barrowman.

The actor was on the ITV daytime show to take to the presenter and his co-host Susanna Reid about his upcoming tour and the return of All Star Musicals.

John, 54, is preparing to head out on the road in April with his 'I Am What I Am' show.

But it is the first time the Doctor Who star has been on the show since allegations were made against him last year.

The Captain Jack Harkness actor was accused of repeatedly exposing himself on the set of the BBC One sci-fi series and its sister show Torchwood.

He later said he had taken part in “tomfoolery” but denied it was ever intended or interpreted as sexual in nature and appearing on ITV's Lorraine back in November, John said the allegations had been "exaggerated".

On Tuesday's Good Morning Britain, John appeared via video link from his home in Palm Springs.

Richard and Susanna introduced John before Richard dived straight in and took over the chat.

"Let's get the difficult one out the way first shall we," the 65-year-old began. "Let's deal with the elephant in the room and then we can move on."

He went on to say that "many people in this country would have assumed your career was over," before bringing up the aforementioned allegations.

"All this came out and it would seem to many that that had sunk your career yet here you are talking about brand new projects," Richard added.

"How have you turned it around?"

"I don't think it's me who's turned it around," John replied. "I think the public understand it was tomfoolery, it was a joke and silliness and was not sexual harassment.

"And you say it was my 'party trick', everyone who was there on set and part of the fun... all the joy, the laughter, the silliness that went on.

"We had a great time."

He then claimed he was being "bullied" by a tabloid newspaper who "exaggerated" what had happened.

"Cancel culture... they've tried to strip my career over 35 years that I've worked very hard with and had a lot of fun in and have been open about the silliness that went on," John went on.

"All the stories are nothing new, they've been out for years. I've written about them in my autobiography but cancel culture is like hyenas trying to strip the meat off of a bone until there is nothing left."

He added: "I'm over it and I have moved on and I think everybody else has moved on.

"It's just cancel culture has gone too far."

Susanna then moved on to ask John about his tour and the return of All Star Musicals which he hosts on ITV

But GMB viewers were stunned by Richard's questioning.

@Sweggers asked: "Is #Richard going off-script? #gmb."

"Richard went straight in the deep end no armbands #gmb," @gettheshotsin tweeted.

@LastSingleGirI commented: "It doesn’t look like John Barrowman was expecting that question from Richard #GMB."

"Wow. I don’t think Barrowman was expecting that opening from Richard Madeley #GMB," @ChrisDeityUK echoed.

While @notonmytv added: "Well done Madeley for bringing up the elephant in the room #gmb."
