Study suggests adding zinc to farmland can prevent chronic undernutrition issue among kids in India

A new study has suggested a possible solution to one of key health issue in India of which a third of children, under five years of age, in the country suffer from. The study published in the journal Scientific Reports has suggested that fortifying soil with essential minerals like zinc- which has a key role to play in the growth and development of kids- can help prevent childhood stunting.

"Our results add to a growing body of literature suggesting that interventions like micronutrient-enriched fertilisers may have a positive effect on health," said study lead author Claire Morton, an undergraduate student in mathematics and computational science at Stanford University, US. This is said to be the first large-scale research that finds a link between children's nutritional status and soil mineral availability in India.
