Study of Nearly 50 Million U.S. Residents Finds Undocumented Immigration Does Not Drive Crime

NEW YORK, NEW YORK - AUGUST 10: People walk through Corona, Queens, a neighborhood with a significant immigrant population, on August 10, 2026, in New York City. Protesters gathered in the neighborhood to denounce the presence of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents arresting people in the area. ICE actions have increased throughout New York City in recent months as the Trump administration continues to press for a surge in arrests in neighborhoods throughout the country with high numbers of immigrants. A large-scale study examining thousands of U.S. neighborhoods found no evidence that increases in undocumented immigration drive crime, challenging a connection President Donald Trump has repeatedly made while advocating for stricter immigration enforcement.

The research, published in the Journal of Urban Affairs, tracked crime trends across 11,500 neighborhoods representing about 46 million residents in U.S. cities between 2010 and 2018. Researchers found that neighborhoods where the share of undocumented residents increased experienced greater declines in property crime and no significant change in violent crime.
