Students rave on roof at raucous house party in Limerick that had DJ playing in garden

Hundreds of sozzled students raved at a raucous house party in Limerick on Monday night that had a DJ playing in the garden while revellers danced on the roof.

Social media clips also show party-goers lighting flares while those inside were heard chanting in scenes reminiscent of the Project X film.

Gardai raced to the house which is located in the College Court area of the city and dispersed the crowd at 1.30am on Tuesday.

College Court in Castletroy, which is located close to the University of Limerick’s campus, has been the scene of a number of wild parties in recent times.

In 2021, University of Limerick briefly funded Garda patrols in the area following a number of raves which breached the Covid-19 restrictions at the time.

At the time, they said any students who attended the parties would be suspended pending a full investigation and could face expulsion.

Justice Minister Helen McEntee also slammed the illegal drink-fuelled gatherings and gardai were forced to make several arrests.

Fianna Fail Councillor Catherine Slattery told The Irish Mirror yesterday that student parties have always happened but said the Covid-19 pandemic highlighted them.

She told us: “I’m sure the residents of College Court in Castletroy that have families and are working are sick of this carry on.

“During Covid, it just got out of hand down there and there were students on roofs playing music all night. This really can’t go on for the residents of the area.

“They’re giving UL a bad name as well with their participation carrying on like that.

“I personally don’t think students should be allowed live in residential areas where there are families trying to get up for work and raise their children with that carry on going on.

“They should be in student villages where they’re not going to disturb anybody but themselves.”

She added: “I just think it’s very silly and ridiculous to partying like that in the middle of a housing estate in one house.”

Councillor Slattery also called for a Garda Station to be opened in the Castletroy area of Limerick in a bid to help tackle the problem.

She added: “I think it’s always been a problem but I think it was just highlighted during Covid especially when we were all supposed to keep our distances from each other and then we see a big party with hundreds of students.

“Residents have been in touch on a number of occasions. They’re at their wit’s ends. It’s not fair.”

A Garda spokesman said: “Gardai attended the scene of an apparent house party that was occurring in College Court, Limerick at approximately 1.30am on Tuesday 27th September 2022.

“This party was dispersed and the occupants of the house were spoken to.”

A University of Limerick spokesman said they do not comment on specific incidents but stressed they work “closely with stakeholders in the community, including students living off-campus, residents’ associations, Limerick City and County Council and An Garda Siochana, to promote good relations between ‘town and gown’.

“UL has appointed a Student Community Engagement Liaison Officer (SCELO) who is in daily contact with the Gardai and residents’ associations and visits student houses to investigate complaints and, where appropriate, to instigate disciplinary action.”
