Strike supporters attack KSEB office, 8 injured

Supporters of the two-day trade union strike attacked a Kerala State Electricity Board (KSEB) office at Alathur and assaulted the employees who reported for work on Tuesday afternoon.

Eight KSEB employees, including an assistant engineer and an overseer, were injured in the attack, which took place allegedly under the leadership of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) [CPI(M)] local committee secretary.

Those injured were KSEB assistant engineer Kunhu Mohammed, overseer Manoj, linemen Natarajan and Arumughan, casual workers Ashraf, Kuttappan, and Raman Kutty, and apprentice Sanjay. They were admitted to the Government Taluk Hospital at Alathur.

About two dozen attackers reached the KSEB office in autorickshaws and on bikes. Among them were a few women.

CPI(M) workers had threatened the KSEB workers when they reported for work on Monday. The windowpanes of the office were destroyed. Furniture pieces and computers at the office were also damaged in the attack.

The CPI(M) said its local secretary was not involved in the attack. The injured KSEB workers demanded action against the attackers after examining the surveillance camera footage. The police said an investigation was on.
