Strictly's Amy Dowden says 'finish line is in sight' amid breast cancer battle

Amy Dowden has revealed the “finish line is in sight” as she gave a positive update on her chemotherapy treatment.

The Strictly Come Dancing star, 33, had a mastectomy earlier this year after being diagnosed with stage three breast cancer. She was told she would have to undergo a course of chemo after medics found the cancer had spread.

Earlier this week, Dowden shared a “frustrating” update amidst her breast cancer battle, revealing that her penultimate chemotherapy session was “in limbo”.

Taking to her Instagram Story, the BBC star explained that she was informed by her specialists that her platelet count needed to increase by Thursday morning in order to have the treatment, otherwise she would have to wait another week.

Thankfully, on Thursday the star updated fans with good news as she shared a sweet snap to her Instagram with a fellow cancer patient while in hospital.

The dancer wrote: "Yayyyyy my blood platelets were all good to go for chemo 7 and it was lovely @kiimmbo.6 7th too (a fellow pink sister on a similar journey) for us both next session we should be ringing that chemo bell and I simply cannot wait!

“So good to chat again today all things chemo and breast cancer. The finish line is in sight for us lovely.

“Thanks as always to the incredible Sheldon Unit who always go above and beyond to make us comfortable and happy as can be!

“Right I'm on the sofa resting up. Thanks all for crossing everything and for all your well wishes! #welshlove amy xxx.”

She also shared a video of a day in chemo with her fans.

Speaking about her potential delay earlier in the week, the Welsh dancer said: “Frustratingly, my neutrophils, white blood cells are all good but my platelets are too low currently for chemo, which is really frustrating because I feel really well.

“But my doctor said, ‘Come in on Thursday morning and let’s see if they’ve improved.’

“Otherwise my chemo will have to be delayed by a week, which obviously, I don’t really want because I just want to get this over and done with.

“So I’m in limbo really. I’ll go tomorrow, but it’s weird because I prepare myself that I’m having chemo but I might not have chemo,” she shared.

Dowden’s final round of chemo should take place on November 9.
