Irish holidaymakers could be caught out by these strict Spanish laws this summer.

People heading to sunny Spain in the next few months need to watch out for these rules that could get you a hefty fine.

From smoking, bikini wearing to public drinking here are a few of the laws worth knowing about as a tourist.

Alcohol

Drinking alcohol on the streets is banned in some areas of Spain including Barcelona and Madrid and you could be fined up to €600 if you’re caught.

Tourists in parts of Majorca and Ibiza are also facing new drinking rules this summer with a six drink limit at some all-inclusive hotels.

Party boat cruises, all-you-can-drink bar crawls and some drink offers will also be banned as a way to cut down on rowdy behaviour.

Bikinis

Bikinis are completely fine to wear on a Spanish beach, but if you’re caught on the street in Barcelona and Marjorca, you could face a €300 fine.

It’s important to be careful as fines can even be issued on streets close to the beach, so tourists need to keep their t-shirt on until they hit the sand.

Smoking

Cigarette butts can be extremely harmful to marine life as well as making the general environment unpleasant for visitors so smoking is now banned on some beaches in areas of Spain.

This includes Barcelona, the Balearics and the Canary islands.

Tourists can smoke in a designated smoking zone and those who don’t follow the rules could be fined up to €2,000.

Soap ban

You read that right, soap is banned in showers on some Spanish beaches and those caught can also be fined up to €750.

Using soap or shampoo at some communal beach shower facilities can see the chemicals in some products can be extremely harmful to marine life.

Balcony fines

If you’re misbehaving, you can face a huge €60,000 fine if you’re caught balconing.

Balconing is when tourists decide to jump into a hotel swimming pool from their balcony or try to climb between balconies.

It’s extremely dangerous and has led to the deaths of several tourists in Spain.
