Stream 'turns white' with no explanation

Walkers were concerned after a stream turned white, with seemingly no explanation.

It's been reported that the stream in Blackbrook, St Helens has turned a milky white colour several times in recent months and years. The Environment Agency has confirmed that this has been reported to them, but they are not yet able to provide an explanation.

Some living close to the stream claimed that the water turns this colour "once every three weeks or so", while others raised concerns over possible pollution being the cause of a change in colour, with pictures showing the contrast between the white stream and normal coloured water in the background.

Some people also questioned the possible impact the water could have on wildlife. Ellen Evans said: "Wow, seriously what is causing that milky substance? Can't be good for the wildlife that frequent the waterways."

The ECHO contacted the Environment Agency for an explanation on what is causing the white coloured water, and a spokesperson confirmed that they had received multiple reports, but had difficulties in pinpointing the exact cause. They urged anyone who notices the change in colour to report it to them.

An EA spokesperson said: "We have sent out teams to investigate on a couple of occasions, but because the reports we receive have been so intermittent, it has been quite difficult for us to trace the source.

"We would encourage members of public to report any sightings as soon as they can, we rely on members of the public to inform us so that we can then investigate."
