Strawberry Moon 2022: Supermoon to light up Ireland's skies tonight

Astronomy enthusiasts are in for a treat as a "Strawberry Moon" will be visible in the sky.

The Moon will be at within 90% of perigee, meaning at its closest approach to the Earth tonight making it a Supermoon.

This will make the Moon appear around 30% brighter and 14% larger than an average Full Moon.

This is the second Supermoon of the year following May's Blood Moon during a total lunar eclipse.

Strawberry Moon is named after wild strawberries that are gathered by Native American tribes after they ripen in June.

Other native names for this type of moon are "Berries Ripen Moon, Green Corn Moon, and Hot Moon".

Dubliners can catch a glimpse of the Supermoon tonight and tomorrow night.

The summer solstice has a major effect on tonight's Supermoon, according to NASA.

And around every 20 years, the Strawberry Moon coincides with the summer solstice.

This phenomenon will be visible via a live stream by The Virtual Telescope Project in Ceccano, Italy.
