Strapped NHS staff rely on clothing bank as cost of living crisis worsens

NHS workers are so hard up they are relying on charity handouts from a uniform bank to clothe their kids.

The financial burden on health workers is so heavy that many cannot afford term-time togs for their children or workwear for themselves.

In just one session, more than 150 staff took home donated school uniforms and work gear.

More than 30 boxes of new uniforms were given by the charity Smile London and Essex.

The cost of living project at Barking, Havering and Redbridge NHS Trust in East London is believed to be the first of its kind in the country.

Volunteer Charleen Elton said: “I’d been donating some of my own things via social media, as well as using these platforms myself as it has become more expensive to buy necessities.

“Numbers went up and up, to over 150 people. I felt really emotional.”

Trusts nationwide are helping staff facing real-terms wage cuts.

Staff in Derbyshire and Leeds can apply for £500 grants, while Leicester hospitals let employee kids eat for £1.
