Storm Mathis latest as Ireland battered with rain but Met Eireann predict major change coming

As Storm Mathis keeps people inside their homes for fear of being drenched to the bone - Met Eireann has issued a rather hopeful update for those hoping warmer weather is just around the corner.

On Thursday evening, people braced as the French-named storm took hold, bringing scattered showers which would give way to "persistent outbreaks of rain moving in from the southwest".

Thankfully, Ireland did not get the worst - with the greatest impact being felt in France, where 70mph winds hit alongside heavy rain in the UK, and while these countries continue to be slapped by adverse weather, a change is on the horizon for Ireland.

In its forecast for the weekend, national forecaster Met Eireann pointed out that while Friday will continue to see a day full of rain, drizzle and mist and a night full of much the same, as the rest of the weekend hits, so too will drier weather.

Here is Met Eireann’s forecast for the weekend:

Friday: Rain will linger in northern and eastern areas with the possibility of spot flooding. Clear spells and showers elsewhere, some showers heavy or prolonged. Lowest temperatures of five to eight degrees in mainly moderate northwest breezes.

Saturday: Ongoing rain over the eastern half of the country will prolong the possibility of spot flooding. Drier and brighter spells are expected in the south and west with scattered showers. Highest temperatures of nine to 12 degrees in a moderate northerly breeze.

However, the patchy rain and drizzle will tend to ease on Saturday night as most places become dry. Turning rather cold as skies begin to clear with the lowest temperatures of two to six degrees with light variable winds.

Sunday: It is expected to be mostly dry on Sunday with a mix of clouds and some bright or sunny spells.

There is just a slight chance of the odd light shower. Top temperatures of 11 to 14 degrees with a light southerly breeze developing.

It looks set to be dry on Sunday night with varying amounts of cloud. A fairly cold night with the lowest temperatures of two to six degrees, the coldest in the north and east of the country.
