Storm Gladys: Met Office weather forecast as strong winds and wintry showers could hit UK

Nottinghamshire was hit by serious weather during the last week as storms caused severe damage across the country.

The end of February is proving to be a hazardous one as Storm Dudley, Storm Eunice and Storm Franklin brought gales and persistent heavy rain to the region and most parts of the UK.

Although weather warnings have now passed for these storms, strong winds and wintry showers are predicted to return later in the week.

And the Met Office has said the next UK storm will be named Storm Gladys.

Although the name of the next storm has already been confirmed, it is too early for the weather experts to tell whether it will properly develop this week.

The Met Office also said that the risk of further impacts from extreme weather 'is lower than we have seen in recent days'.

But in the East Midlands, conditions will be windy and cold on Thursday (February 24), with blustery wintry showers.

Forecaster Mark Wilson told the PA news agency: "It’s been an improving picture following a really bad start to the week, with strong winds due to Storm Franklin.

"Outbreaks of rain have been clearing off to the east, and some parts have been brighter but still windy, so not a great start but it has improved.

"Overnight and in the early hours of Tuesday bands of rain and strong winds in the north of England, Scotland and Northern Ireland will begin to move, bringing scattered showers across many regions, including those which have already seen flooding.

"Although there won’t be a huge amount of rain and it will pass through quickly, further rainfall on top of the regions which have seen flooding is not helpful and could cause recovery to slow down massively."

Here's the outlook for the East Midlands for the week ahead from the Met Office:

Tuesday:

A band of heavy rain and strong gusts moves southeast this morning, clearing by midday to sunny spells and the odd isolated shower. Turning cooler, with blustery winds, particularly over high ground. Maximum temperature 11 °C.

Tuesday night:

Partly clear this evening with patchy cloud and gusty winds. Becoming clear and cold overnight as winds strengthen once again toward dawn. Minimum temperature 2 °C.

Wednesday:

A cold but bright and breezy start for most. Partly cloudy through the afternoon with isolated blustery showers. Showery rain and strengthening winds moving southeast through the evening. Maximum temperature 10 °C.

Outlook for Thursday to Saturday:

Windy and cold Thursday, with blustery wintry showers. Likely drier Friday, with easing winds and some sunny spells. Mostly dry and breezy Saturday, with partly cloudy skies.
