Storm Eunice: Met Eireann forecast predicts ‘icy stretches’ and ‘hazardous conditions’ this weekend

Met Eireann have predicted that Storm Eunice will cause some icy stretches early this morning that may lead to hazardous conditions.

It is expected that rain will start today, possibly falling as sleet for a time with snowfall possible over mountains.

The rain will clear to bright spells and scattered showers today, however more rain or drizzle will return later this evening. Highest temperatures of 7 to 9 degrees are expected.

It will be breezy too with fresh to strong westerly winds developing.

Tonight will be wet with outbreaks of rain. Turning increasingly windy tonight too with southwest winds increasing strong. Becoming milder overnight with temperatures rising to between 7 and 10 degrees.

Tomorrow will be wet and very windy with strong to near gale force and gusty southwest winds. Rain will be heavy at times and may lead to spot flooding.

It will brighten up later in the afternoon with rain clearing to frequent showers. It will be mild during the morning and early afternoon with highest temperatures of 9 to 11 degrees, however it will turn much colder after rain clears in the evening.

Alan O’Reilly at Carlow Weather said: “I’m afraid the latest weather models increase the impacts of bad weather tomorrow with very strong gusts and heavy rain.

“The Northwest and West will take the brunt of the winds. Keep an eye on weather warnings as likely to be updated based on the latest charts.

“The impacts of Sunday's weather will be worse than storm Eunice for the northwest and parts of the West as they escaped Friday but they won’t escape Sunday.

“All areas will see some very poor weather tomorrow and tomorrow night so take care if planning outdoor activities.”

Meteorologist Matthew Martin also said: “It’s staying unsettled into the weekend and early next week as an active jet stream continues to drive Atlantic weather fronts our way.

“It’ll stay quite breezy on Saturday with further spells of rain and some sleet and snow during the morning.

"Another windy day on Sunday with further wet weather leading to localised flooding in places, with winds picking up further on Sunday night.”
