Storm Eunice closures across Merseyside as UK braced for heavy winds

Merseyside is bracing itself for gale force winds today as Storm Eunice sweeps across the UK.

The Met Office has upgraded weather warnings across the country, with an amber warning covering the whole of Merseyside.

Storm Eunice is set to cause travel chaos on Friday with public transport operators, including Merseyrail, advising people not to travel unless necessary.

National Highways has also issued a severe weather alert as it warned high-sided vehicles along with caravans and motorbikes are at high risk of being blown over.

Here are the latest road and park closures across Merseyside:

New Brighton seafront will be closed from the junction of Harrison Drive to Rowson Street for public safety reasons but access will remain for residents and businesses.

The closures are expected to remain in place until 3pm but could reopen earlier subject to safety inspections and clearance of any debris.

Wirral Council said Dee Lane and South Parade in West Kirkby will also be closed from 9.30am until at least 4pm.

Closures are in place on Marine Drive in Southport between 10am and 3pm from Weld Road to the Fairway junctions as a precaution, due to high tides and the possibility of the road flooding.

A number of parks will also close across Merseyside to prevent people from being injured from any falling trees or branches.

Liverpool Council said the Festival Gardens and Croxteth Hall Walled Garden will be closed on Friday, along with grass football sites.

Botanic Gardens, Hesketh Park, Moorside Park, Derby Park and Victoria Park in Sefton will also be closed and a safety assessment will be carried out at each park before reopening.

All public parks in St Helens will also be closed for the day and residents are advised not to visit open spaces like Sankey Valley, where there is an increased risk of falling trees in strong winds.

Earlestown Market in Newton-le-Willows will also be closed on Friday.
