Storm Eunice brings Edinburgh weather warning for ice as city set for wintry conditions

Edinburgh has been issued with a yellow weather warning for ice as Storm Eunice hits Scotland.

The Met Office sent out the warning in the past hour and it begins from 6pm and last until 9am tomorrow (February 19) morning.

Edinburgh residents are urged to take caution and the Met warn that "icy patches on some untreated roads, pavements and cycle paths" have a high probability of causing "some injuries from slips and falls on icy surfaces."

Edinburgh and most of Scotland have been battered with high winds this week, and now the severe weather conditions are set to worsen with the onset of heavy snow and ice today.

The Met Office say that once the snow has fallen today, icy roads and pavements will become dangerous in the aftermath.

A spokesperson said: "Brisk northwesterly winds will continue to bring increasingly wintry showers across this area overnight on Friday and at first on Saturday.

"Some snow is likely to accumulate over around 200 m (another 10-15 cm over Scottish Mountains), but the wintry mix is more likely to bring a risk of icy roads and pavements, as surfaces left wet by showers (or hail/snow/slush) then fall below freezing. Most showers will ease by Saturday morning."

Large parts of the UK came under the yellow warning for ice, from the Highlands in Scotland to a huge swathe of Northern England.

The snow is expected to clear over the weekend, but it will reappear later in the week.

The BBC 14-day forecast predicts that heavy snow will return to Edinburgh on Thursday, February 24, and again on Monday February 28.
