Storm Eunice: Asda store evacuated after roof is blown loose

An Asda store has been evacuated after its roof was blown loose by Storm Eunice

The superstore in Merthyr Tydfil was evacuated on Friday afternoon (February 18) after its roof sustained damage in high winds, and amid fears that it could be blown off completely.

Video from the scene shows part of the roof billowing in the strong wind - which reached speeds of nearly 90mph in some parts of Wales - while customers shelter from the hail in the car park. You can read the latest on Storm Eunice here.

The supermarket remains closed following the evacuation, but is set to re-open when it is safe to do. This could be later on Friday night, or Saturday morning, with staff constantly reassessing the situation. Further weather warnings remain in place for Wales for Friday evening and Saturday.

It was just one of a number of places affected by the storm, with a school having parts of its roof blown off, lorries being blown over on the M4 and lots of other carnage.

Some shoppers said they were prevented from accessing the store as it was evacuated, while trolleys were also reportedly put up as barriers to stop people from entering.

One person told WalesOnline: "I was turned away at the entrance to the store by the staff manning the car park. They were very helpful but looked extremely cold."

A spokesperson for Asda said: “The recent inclement weather has caused damage to areas of our Merthyr Tydfil store meaning for safety reasons we have temporarily closed.

"Our colleagues are working hard to get the store back open as quickly as possible and we would like to thank our customers for their understanding.”
