Several football matches have been postponed in the United Kingdom due to the effects of Storm Darragh this weekend, most notably Saturday’s Merseyside derby between Everton and Liverpool.
The United Kingdom has been hit by Storm Darragh, with Wales and South West England being the worst-hit areas, and several high-profile football matches have been postponed as a result.
Red, Amber and Yellow Weather Warnings for wind were issued by the Met Office prior to the storm hitting, with gusts of over 90 mph wreaking havoc in some areas of the country.
Saturday’s Merseyside derby, due to kick off at 12:30, is without a doubt the most notable postponement thus far. Everton confirmed that the game had been called off on safety grounds following a Safety Advisory Group meeting at Goodison Park, attended by representatives of both clubs, Merseyside Police and Liverpool City Council.
A new date for the fixture to be played will be announced in due course, the club have also confirmed.
In Wales, meanwhile, all football matches from grassroots level all the way up to the Cymru Premier have been postponed as a result of the storm.
The Football Association of Wales released a statement on Friday confirming the blanket postponements and revealed that potential postponements of Sunday’s fixtures would be considered on a case-by-case basis.
Championship matches Cardiff City vs Watford and Plymouth Argyle vs Oxford United have also been called off, as well as games in League One, League Two and in Northern Ireland’s NIFL Premiership.
