Storm Alex heading straight towards Ireland as Met Eireann forecast worst days of washout

Ireland is in the direct line of tropical Storm Alex as the country is set for a washout over the next few days.

Met Eireann has forecast a terrible week of weather, saying heavy rain, thunderstorms and gusty winds are all on the cards.

However, the forecaster has said that conditions are set to brighten up in time for the weekend.

Tropical Storm Alex is currently picking up pace in the Atlantic after causing weather chaos in southern Florida and Bermuda just a few days ago.

The storm is set to weaken as it heads towards Ireland, with its remnants turning into a low-pressure system that will cause windy and rainy weather as it passes near the country.

Latest weather models - which are subject to change - show its centre staying west of Ireland, but still bringing the potential for strong gusts to the west of the country.

Met Eireann has forecast the worst of the weather on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday before brighter conditions swoop in for the weekend.

Here's Met Eireann's forecast for the rest of the week:

Tomorrow

"A breezy day on Wednesday with showers or longer spells of rain, heavy at times especially in parts of Ulster and Connacht with some isolated thunderstorms possible.

"Top temperatures of 15 to 18 degrees with a moderate to fresh and gusty westerly wind that will be strong at times along coasts.

Thursday

"On Thursday, scattered outbreaks of rain and drizzle will spread northwards over the country. It will turn mostly dry with sunny spells by evening time. Maximum temperatures of 16 to 20 degrees in a moderate to fresh south or southwest breeze.

"Generally dry on Thursday night with just a few showers, mainly in the south and west. Lowest temperatures of 10 to 13 degrees in moderate to fresh southerly winds, strong at times along Atlantic coasts.

Friday

"It looks set to be a breezy day on Friday with sunny spells and scattered showers. A few heavy downpours are possible. Maximum temperatures will range from 17 to 20 degrees in a fresh to strong and gusty southwesterly breeze.

"On Friday night, there will be some showers in the north and northwest but most other areas will be dry with clear spells. Lowest temperatures of 10 to 13 degrees in moderate to fresh southwest winds.

Saturday

"A bright and breezy day is expected on Saturday with long sunny spells and a few scattered showers. Highest temperatures of 17 to 20 degrees in a moderate to fresh southwest breeze.

"Mainly dry overnight with clear spells and lows of 8 to 11 degrees.#

Sunday

"Current indications suggest Sunday will be another largely dry day with sunny spells and just a few showers, mainly in the north of the country. Maximum temperatures of 16 to 19 degrees in moderate westerly winds."
