Two men on bail charged after wild police pursuit across Canberra

Police have arrested two men on bail after a stolen four-wheel-drive allegedly tailgated an emergency ambulance through red lights before the vehicle and a police car collided during a wild pursuit across Canberra overnight.

The white Ford Everest had been stolen from a Bungendore driveway on Wednesday morning, June 24, after being left running briefly to defrost the windows.

About 11.20pm on Friday, June 26, paramedics noticed the stolen vehicle closely tailgating them on Gungahlin Drive as they were operating under lights and sirens.

The Ford Everest allegedly followed the ambulance through red lights and pulled alongside it by driving in bicycle lanes and on the hard shoulder of the roadway.

Police located the vehicle a short time later in Braddon, where it fled the scene and drove dangerously through North Canberra, Gungahlin and Belconnen suburbs.

The vehicle and a police car collided on Maribyrnong Avenue in Kaleen before officers pursued the 4WD into Lawson.

The vehicle crashed through several locked gates at a Lawson construction site before eventually coming to a stop on Ginninderra Drive, near Aikman Drive.

Three occupants fled the vehicle on foot, and police arrested a 19-year-old man and a 30-year-old man a short time later.

Both men, who were already subject to active bail conditions for other alleged offending, were charged with breach of bail and riding in a motor vehicle without consent.

The pair are scheduled to appear in the ACT Magistrates Court on Saturday, June 27, as inquiries continue to locate the third person.

Investigators are urging anyone with dash-cam footage of the white Ford Everest driving dangerously on Friday to come forward.

Anyone who can assist police should provide their contact details to Crime Stoppers via the Crime Stoppers ACT website by quoting reference number 8426734.
