Stockport residents without running water for most of the day following burst pipe

A number of residents in Stockport were without running water following a burst pipe this morning.

United Utilities said a burst water pipe on Garners Lane in Davenport was reported to them just after 4am this morning (April 24). As a result of the burst, multiple residents with SK2 and SK3 postcodes, including areas of Shaw Heath and Cale Green, were with no water or low pressure until around 5pm this afternoon.

One resident, who asked not to be named, told the M.E.N: “We first realised something was wrong when we got up this morning and the shower wasn't working and everyone in our neighbourhood’s WhatsApp group was waking up to the same discovery.

“We've just had very low pressure but luckily we've still had a water supply throughout. It looks like other people have been completely cut off."

An update to residents said work had been undertaken to dig holes to access the water network underground and fix the burst. Water tankers were also on site, which were being used to pump water back into the affected network until repairs were complete.

The latest message on the United Utilities website, which was shared before 4pm, said: "The work in your area is still ongoing and we can’t thank you enough for your patience whilst we sort this. We are making good progress, but it’s a little trickier than we first thought so the work will continue throughout the evening.

"Our fleet of water tankers will continue to pump water into the network until all repairs are complete. Sorry for the inconvenience this is causing, our team are doing all they can to get your supply back to normal."

A text sent to affected residents just after 4.30pm this afternoon stated: "We're progressing with the repairs to the burst in your area, but we still have work to do to get things back up and running.

“In the meantime, you may have noticed our fleet of water tankers in your area. They are pumping extra water into the pipes to keep your taps flowing whilst we continue with our work. We're really sorry if this causes any disturbance, our teams will do all they can to minimise this. Thanks for your patience.”

In a statement to the M.E.N just after 5pm this afternoon, United Utilities confirmed the repair work had been completed.

A spokesperson for United Utilities said: “Our teams have been working to repair a burst on Garners Lane in Stockport today. This is now complete and taps are flowing as normal.

“We thank customers for their patience and apologise for any inconvenience.”
