Stirling couple receive apology after new kitchen installation headache

Stirling tenants who are having their kitchen replaced under a council project say they have been left with a range of snagging issues.

William and Annie Mooney were told by contractors that their new kitchen would take six days to instal at their Buntine Crescent home between late March and early April.

But the St Ninians couple pointed out this week that the work was not completed to that timescale and that they were left with a number of outstanding problems which included unpainted walls, unsealed skirting boards, and loose sockets.

Mrs Mooney said this week: “We were delighted to get a new kitchen, but it didn’t turn out as expected.

“We’re pretty fed up to be honest. They told us it would take around six days - but the workmen were in and out and back again for about five weeks.

“It was really quite stressful.

“We couldn’t go anywhere because we had to be in for the workmen. It was like being a prisoner in your own home.

“And to add to that there are still issues that need to be attended to like the skirting boards which need to be sealed.

“Sockets also had to be screwed down to make them more secure.

“Painters were supposed to arrive last week to finish the walls and the ceiling, but they never turned up. We ended up doing the painting jobs ourselves.”

In February, Stirling Council committed £1.499m to install 250 new kitchens in council homes during 2022/23 under the Housing Revenue Account Capital Plan. Some of these kitchens are being fitted by an external contractor and it is understood that there have been supply and labour resources issues causing delays.

A Stirling Council spokesperson said this week that they are currently working to address the Mooneys’ complaint, adding: “The council apologises to Mr and Mrs Mooney and officers are working with the contractor to bring the matter to a positive conclusion.”
