Stirling Albion squad back in training as preparations for new season begin

Stirling Albion are looking to bolster their squad as they return to pre-season training.

The team will train Thursdays, Saturdays and Tuesdays over the next few weeks before the season kicks off with a Premier Sports Cup tie at Dumbarton on Saturday, July 9.

A number of friendly matches are also likely ahead of the competitive fixtures getting under way next month with a fixture against local rivals Alloa Athletic at the Indodrill Stadium confirmed for Tuesday, June 28. The Wasps are currently managed by Brian Rice and finished fifth in cinch League 1 last season.

Binos boss Young has added four new players to his squad so far and is closing in on more new additions after Stenhousemuir striker Robert Thomson and East Fife trio Aaron Dunsmore, Ross Davidson and Danny Denholm put pen to paper last month.

Young said: “We’re at about 15 signed players at the moment so we need to add to that and we are hopefully close to getting one or two more in. We will look to get the squad up to 20 or so before the season starts and that could include the loan market. Young Will Greenhorn will get an opportunity in the pre-season games as well.

“James Creaney will be registered but he will be focusing on the coaching side again as my assistant so he’s only likely to be involved in emergencies. It was great to get Paul McLean back for the last few games of the season after his long injury lay-off and hopefully he can play a big part this year.

“We start training this week, beginning at Stirling University, and are looking forward to getting back to it although one or two of the boys are on holiday which is often the case at part-time clubs. I think most clubs at our level are starting back about now because it’s only four weeks until the start of the Premier Sports Cup.

“We’ll have a few friendlies later in the month then hopefully something at the beginning of July but the pitch is being done so they will be away from home.”

Stirling will play Premier Sports Cup ties against Dumbarton, Raith Rovers, Aberdeen and Peterhead in Group A before kicking off their cinch League 2 campaign on Saturday, July 30. Fixtures for 2022/23 will be published by the SPFL on Friday, June 17.
