Steven Gerrard told 'the best thing' for Aston Villa ahead of Leeds United clash

Former Scotland international Alan Hutton reckons Steven Gerrard needs to select the same team that faced off against Southampton when Villa take on Leeds United next weekend.

Villa beat the Saints 1-0 heading into the international break following a dismal spell of form. Despite their strong squad, Gerrard and co have not gotten off to the best of starts in the Premier League this term.

When Leeds take on Villa at Elland Road on October 2, it will be the Whites first competitive game in nearly a month.

Due to the passing of Queen Elizabeth II, Leeds' last two fixtures against Nottingham Forest and Manchester United were postponed, meaning Jesse Marsch's side have not played a game since their 5-2 defeat to Brentford at the start of September.

Gerrard and Villa have struggled to find a formation that suits them this season, with the former Liverpool legend continuing to chop and change his starting XI during the early weeks of the season.

However, their last two results, a 1-1 draw against Manchester City and the win over Southampton, saw Gerrard name relatively similar sides, which could be a sign of who Leeds will face next weekend.

And Hutton believes a settled starting XI would benefit Villa greatly heading into their contest with Leeds as it would allow the side to gel.

"That’s the thing for me, will it be formation or players coming in and out, it looked a little bit unsettled," Hutton told Villa News.

"I think the best thing for the team moving forward is trying to get that consistent run of games where it is the same people. Of course, you are going to have to make the odd change here or there, depending on injuries but it’s having that settled unit to work on and go and put on performances.

"They’ve done that as you could see against Manchester City so there is no reason to go and make big changes there’s enough ability within that line-up to go and win games. If they can remain defensively solid like they have done the last couple of games, then that is obviously good moving forward."
