Steven Gerrard has not been able to land the Southampton manager's job after the former Rangers manager held 'talks' over a Premier League return.
The legendary Liverpool midfielder has also been reported as a target for Leeds United, as both sides look for new leaders. Jesse Marsch was wanted by Saints after Leeds pulled the trigger on him, but a late change of heart due to length of contract has left the St Mary's club scrambling for alternatives in a dramatic twist.
One other candidate Southampton are believed to have spoken with is Gerrard, who was sacked by Aston Villa earlier this season after less than a year in charge. That first crack at England's top table was earned after bringing the Premiership title back to Rangers in 2021 and he also enjoyed success in the Europa League, but the Daily Mirror claim St Mary's chiefs were 'not convinced' after discussions.
The same can be said for ex-Sheffield United manager Chris Wilder. Aberdeen were linked with an ambitious move to make him Pittodrie gaffer after Jim Goodwin's exit but that link has gone cold.
It's claimed he's held discussions over a return to the Premier League but he also hasn't left Southampton satisfied. They dismissed Nathan Jones last week after just three months in charge.
