Former Tottenham man Steven Bergwijn has admitted that he had been looking forward to sealing a move to Ajax for 18 months. Joining Spurs from PSV in January 2020, the winger found himself in and out of the team and his minutes were limited under Jose Mourinho, Nuno Espirito Santo and Antonio Conte.
Missing out on a move to Ajax in January, with the Lilywhites keeping the Dutchman for the remainder of the season in their Champions League quest, Bergwijn continued to play a bit-part role despite his heroics in the incredible 3-2 win at Leicester City and also on the international stage for Netherlands.
Now that he finally has his move after signing a long-term deal at the John Cruijff ArenA, the player has opened up on his return home and admitted that he "couldn't relax completely" this summer as he waited for the move to get the green light.

"I have been looking forward to this for a year and a half. I’m glad everything is over, and I’m rid of the uncertainty. Now I have peace in my head,” he told Dutch publication De Telegraaf on his Ajax move.
“I had already dealt with Ajax about my contract, but then the clubs still had to come to an agreement. That was down to me. When you’re on holiday, you’re thinking about what will happen. I was away, but I couldn’t relax completely.
“Although I didn’t play enough at Tottenham Hotspur, he [Van Gaal] called me up for the important qualification matches against Montenegro and Norway, he let me play in Montenegro and I was in the starting line-up against the Norwegians.
“It’s just better if I play week in, week out. Physically it is difficult to play three matches a week at the World Cup if you have not made enough minutes at your club.”
