Steve Nicol warns Liverpool change is needed to avoid 'downfall' against Manchester City

Jurgen Klopp has been warned by Liverpool club great over a tactic that will need to be improved before they play Manchester City.

The Reds claimed a 1-0 win over West Ham at the weekend to temporarily move three points behind Man City in the Premier League table.

However, that gap was extended back to six points after Man City’s 4-1 derby win over Manchester United on Sunday, with Liverpool still having a game in hand.

Despite Liverpool getting all three points at the weekend, West Ham created several decent opportunities.

Former Liverpool defender Steve Nicol has warned his old club will need to improve the defence in order to have a chance of beating Man City.

Nicol also argued why the win over West Ham ‘changed nothing’ as he gives his verdict on the Premier League title race.

"They don't have a lot of guile, West Ham, and it's a good job for Liverpool because they could have lost two or three goals," Nicol told ESPN FC, speaking shortly after Liverpool’s win on Saturday.

"The backline just wasn't together and it looked as though it was going to lose goals.

"So they got away with one but you know what, sometimes you do get away with something.

"And sometimes that's just the way it goes and it's all about getting away with it, and they did. So they move on.

"But the next three or four games before they play City, the starting XI are going to have to get this backline sorted out because it's going to be their downfall if that ends up happening."

Nicol continued: "It changes nothing, today changes nothing.

"I can tell you they weren't at their best, I can tell you about their backline.

"Obviously it's easier to point out the things that didn't go well but right now they won and right now that's all that matters until they get to play Manchester City.

"Then every single thing that they do would have to be perfect."
