Liverpool legend Steve Nicol believes new signing Calvin Ramsay will have no trouble settling in at the club and that his new teammates will make it ‘easy’ for him.
Ramsay completed a move to Anfield from Aberdeen in a deal worth just over £6.5m earlier this month, having come through the ranks at his hometown team. He was voted The Scottish Football Writers’ Young Player of the Year after a superb breakout season and will now look to carve out a successful Premier League career under Jurgen Klopp.
Nicol made a similar move down south, joining the Reds from Ayr United in 1981. He went on to make 468 appearances for the club. As a fellow Scottish right-back making the move at a young age, Nicol was fortunate to have compatriots like Sir Kenny Dalglish, Graeme Souness and Alan Hansen as teammates when he arrived at Anfield. The Scot recounted how this helped him to settle and believes it will be similar for Ramsay, with Nicol keen to highlight the role that Andy Robertson will play.

“They made it easy for me,” Nicol told the Daily Mail. “And when I look at this Liverpool squad now, they look really together, too. No doubt Robbo will be the first one that will look after Ramsay, so I expect it just to be the same.
“Robbo is a good guy as well, so I don’t think there’s any danger. As I said, he’ll look after Calvin.”
Nicol was 19 when he arrived at the club for a bargain £300,000 fee. He went on to win five first Division titles, three FA Cups, one European Cup, and one FA Charity Shield and Football League Super Cup.
Ramsay is a year younger at 18 and will undoubtedly face comparisons with Nicol as he looks to help provide back-up for arguably Liverpool’s finest ever right back in Trent Alexander-Arnold. If Ramsay can achieve even a fraction of Nicol’s honours, he will have been an astute acquisition.
