Steve Kerr wants to remain with Warriors beyond this season

Steve Kerr is in the final year of his current contract with the Golden State Warriors. The veteran coach has led the franchise to four championships during his tenure on the sidelines. He’s also begun to nurture some of the team’s younger talent, making the best of the two-timeline strategy the front office has clearly been in favor of.

However, there has been little sign of movement on a potential contract extension for Kerr. It’s worth noting that Kerr is usually private on these matters, so a lack of movement doesn’t mean a lack of discussion is happening behind the scenes.

During a recent interview with Logan Murdock of The Ringer, Kerr admitted that he would like to continue in his role as head coach beyond the current season.

“I want to be back,” Kerr said. “I’ve made that clear every time I’ve been asked about it. The only thing I won’t talk about is just any detail of contract stuff, but I’ve been very open. I want to come back. Joe [Lacob has] told me he wants me back, so I think I’ll be back.”

The Warriors are currently in the process of turning their season around. They’ve endured a difficult time throughout the last few months, dealing with injuries, suspensions, and player slumps.
Yet, things appear to be getting back on track. Assuming the Warriors can sustain their current performance level and begin to surge up the Western Conference, that will likely bode well for Kerr’s chances of remaining with the team moving forward.
Furthermore, Kerr has developed close working relationships with everyone inside the franchise. If he wants to remain as the team’s head coach, it’s unlikely Joe Lacob and Mike Dunleavy Jr. will look to make a change.
