Jonathan Kuminga continues to emerge as a key player for the Golden State Warriors. The third-year forward has cemented his spot within the team’s starting lineup and appears to be one of their most consistent offensive threats. His production has been a significant reason why the Warriors suddenly look like a team capable of climbing the Western Conference and becoming contenders later in the season.
When speaking to the media following Golden State’s’ win over the Memphis Grizzlies on Friday (Feb. 2,) Steve Kerr shared his thoughts on what’s been turbo-charging Kuminga’s performances and production level. The veteran coach also credited the years of hard work behind the scenes that Kuminga has been putting in so he can experience his current breakout.
“JK has really figured it out,” Kerr said. “The game has slowed down for him. He’s understanding now, when to attack, how to attack. I thought he made some good passes tonight. He’s so powerful and explosive going to the rim, and I think he just sees the floor better than ever. This past month, I think he’s just really broken through, and it’s been amazing to watch. Two and a half years of a lot of work, ups and downs, and he’s stayed with it the whole time. I’m so impressed with what he’s done. He’s becoming a hell of a player.”
Kumina was the Warriors top-scorer during their win over Memphis. He ended the game with 29 points, 6 rebounds, 4 assists, and 2 steals while shooting 73.3% from the field and going 1-of-1 from 3-point range. His athleticism has provided Kerr’s rotation with a new dynamic that has forced opposing defenses into some tough decisions when trying to split their attention between the perimeter and the restricted area.
Since being slotted into Kerr’s new-look frontcourt, we’ve seen some stellar play from Kuminga. If he continues to operate at his current level, there should be no reason why the Warriors don’t surge up the conference standings and secure a playoff place.
