Steve Kerr discusses Klay Thompson’s shooting struggles

Klay Thompson is struggling to find his rhythm from the perimeter. The veteran wing is currently shooting 32.9% from 3-point range on 6.8 attempts per game. His struggles are somewhat of a surprise; Thompson ended last season averaging 41.2% from deep. As such, he still hopes to snap out of his current slump.

Steve Kerr believes the Golden State Warriors must remain patient with the former All-Star. When speaking to the media after the Warriors’ fifth straight loss on Thursday, he noted how his team needs to find ways to get Thompson more open on the perimeter to help put him in a position to break out of his current slump.

“Just to be patient,” Kerr said after Golden State’s loss to the Oklahoma City Thunder. “It’s tough. They loaded up on him and made it really tough…We weren’t really able to create any space for him with our lineups or our offense. They just kept him really smothered. He was trying to get his own shot. Took a lot of tough ones out of frustration. He’s just trying to get himself going. We gotta try and get him some cleaner looks.”

Thompson is currently in the final year of his contract. He will be an unrestricted free agent next summer. The Warriors are likely monitoring his impact throughout the current season before deciding on what a potential extension could look like.

Thompson, 33, will undoubtedly begin to knock down his shots eventually. He’s a career 41.5% scorer from deep and has proven himself to be one of the best floor spacers in the NBA. However, his slump is hurting the Warriors’ overall offense; they need him to snap out of his struggles sooner rather than later.
