Steve Cooper sends classy message to Nottingham Forest fans after dismal defeat to Leicester City

Head coach Steve Cooper expressed his gratitude towards Nottingham Forest fans after his side’s 4-0 thumping at Leicester City.

The travelling contingent had very little to cheer against their near-neighbours on another miserable night for the Reds. Their losing run was extended to five matches and they slipped to the bottom of the Premier League table, with Cooper’s position under serious threat as a result.

But even when the game was well beyond any kind of salvage, the away end was in terrific voice. They kept singing right until the end, making all the noise at the King Power Stadium.

From the moment he took charge little more than a year ago, Cooper established a strong relationship with Forest fans - and they continued to sing his name in defeat to the Foxes. It remains to be seen whether he will be in the dugout at the City Ground next Monday, against Aston Villa, but the Welshman insisted there was nothing significant about going over to applaud supporters after the final whistle.

“I feel for the supporters. They were brilliant. You could see how good they were,” he said.

“I’m grateful they never gave up on the team. Not that I thought they would.

“We’ve just got to keep going. It’s tough.

“I was just showing my appreciation for what they did. It can’t be easy for them, in a derby, to see that again.

“That’s where my thoughts are. My negative feelings at the moment are nothing to do with myself, it’s just about that this club has lost another game - and it (the club) means a lot to me. I just went over to clap the fans to say thank you for sticking with us and making the noise they did.”
