Steve Cooper provides injury update as Nottingham Forest goalkeeper substituted against Barnsley

Boss Steve Cooper eased any injury fears over goalkeeper Dean Henderson being substituted in Nottingham Forest’s pre-season friendly draw at Barnsley.

The Manchester United loanee looked a little uncomfortable as he went to take a kick in the first half of the 0-0 draw at Oakwell. And he was replaced soon after by fellow new arrival Wayne Hennessey.

The latter only put pen to paper on Friday, joining the Reds on a two-year deal. But he replaced his fellow summer signing with barely half an hour played against the Tykes.

“It was a precaution,” Cooper said of Henderson being brought off. “It’s been a really heavy week physically, including for the goalkeepers.

“He’s not injured, he’s fine. He just felt his groin a little bit.

“He did the right thing by coming off. On the flip side, it was great to get Wayne involved. They were going to play 45 minutes each anyway, that was part of the plan.

“He’s only been in the building a couple of days and already he’s a real presence around the place. As well as being a good goalkeeper, that was one of the real reasons why we wanted him here.

“All of these guys want to play. It’s good that he’s had the opportunity to do it sooner rather than later.”

The stalemate at Barnsley was Forest’s third run-out of pre-season, having lost to Coventry City in Spain and beaten Burton Albion 1-0 in midweek. Next up is a match against Hertha Berlin at the Pirelli Stadium on Wednesday.
