Steve Cooper coy on Nottingham Forest transfer question as timeline proposed

Head coach Steve Cooper hasn’t ruled out January signings being made before Nottingham Forest return to Premier League action in little more than a week’s time.

Gustavo Scarpa is the only newcomer to the squad so far this window, with the Brazilian having linked up with the Reds last month. He was ineligible to play against Chelsea last weekend, but came off the bench to make his debut in Wednesday night’s 1-0 win over Southampton.

Forest are targeting further additions before the month is out. And with two cup games to come over the next week - against Blackpool in the FA Cup and Wolverhampton Wanderers in the Carabao Cup - Cooper says there is a possibility the club could have strengthened by the time they face Leicester City in the league on Saturday week.

“Possibly, possibly not,” he said. “There is obviously time, so we will see.

“I don't think we'll sign anyone before we play Blackpool, that's for sure. But I wouldn't say that that's not possible (making a signing before taking on the Foxes) just because of the time and it being a free weekend from the Premier League coming up, so we will see.

“In terms of what we think it could take to improve us, we are clear on what that is. But don't ask me to tell you in case things don't come off, because if they don't, we carry on and we work with the players, who are giving everything at the moment and who we are enjoying working with.

“That's what I'll be doing, really working strongly with the players. But if there are changes, we will deal with them as they come and go, literally, and try to stay on the track we are hoping to be on. We will take things as they come.”

The Reds made 22 signings during the summer window, but have been hit hard by injuries since then, with a number of long-term absentees on the sidelines. Bolstering their ranks at centre-back, in midfield and in attack is the priority for Cooper this month, both to cover for those players out of action and to boost his team's survival bid.
