Steve Clarke delves deeper into Austin MacPhee touchline row

Steve Clarke has further delved into his touchline row with Scotland coach Austin MacPhee on Friday night.

The pair exchanged some heated words in the Scotland dugout as Germany romped to a 5-1 victory at the Allianz Arena in Munich.

Directly after the match, the former Kilmarnock manager was asked about the incident, to which he sharply responded: "Is that a serious question?"

However, two days on, and it seems the national team head coach has reflected more fully on the situation involving himself and the Aston Villa backroom staff member.

Clarke insists MacPhee was in the 'wrong place, at the wrong time,' as he voiced his frustrations over another German counter-attack on his side.

"It was really simple," the 60-year-old said. "Everyone on the touchline was frustrated. You get these moments all the time but you don't normally see it because we are tucked under a canopy or whatever.

"Austin just happened to be in the wrong place at the wrong time as I turned round after we took a short free-kick instead of a long one to put the ball into the box which is how we got the goal. It wasn't Austin's fault because the players have to make that decision on the pitch.

"We got counter-attacked and I thought 'We have lost we have lost enough goals Austin, we don't need to lose any more goals'.

"We just had a little discussion about it, that was all. Listen, he's got long, blonde hair but I am not going to give him a cuddle."

Meanwhile, Callum McGregor has absolved Ryan Porteous from any blame for Scotland’s harrowing defeat to Germany in their Euro 2024 opener.

Porteous received a straight red card from French referee Clement Turpin in added-on time at the end of the first half on Friday night after a reckless and dangerous two-footed foul on the hosts’ captain Ilkay Gundogan inside his own area.
