Steve Clarke brands Scotland 'outstanding' as he reveals what he told players after historic Spain win

Steve Clarke insists the Scotland squad understand the magnitude of the victory they secured over Spain.

The Tartan Army were witnesses to a piece of history as man of the hour Scott McTominay scored a brace to down Luis de la Fuente's men and allow the Scots to move to top of the group on six points. It was the first time Scotland had triumphed over Spain since 1984 in a night to remember in Mount Florida.

And for Clarke it has been a perfect week, but he isn't quite prepared to say that their EURO 2024 hopes are well in sight, and is urging focus and concentration. The ex-Killie boss insists the squad can see what it means to fans and that this must be the driving force going forward.

He told Viaplay Sports: "I'm delighted with the team's performance, I thought the players were outstanding from the first minute to last minute. Five changes but the dynamics, the enthusiasm and the quality the team didn't change which is great for us. It feels like a step forward in what we are trying to do as a nation and as a team.

"But it's only six points - you don't qualify with six points, which is what I said to the team after. When we had the ball we looked a threat, we didn't have an awful lot of possession but what we had we used very well and that was always going to be important.

"The defensive shape is good, the distance between the units is really good which stops a large part of Spain's game - but the credit goes to the players on the pitch, they're the guys who have to do the hard yards.

"Speaking to a few after the game, they have said they're physically tired and mentally tired - thinking all the time about where the Spanish players are going to be.

"It was competitive for both teams. That's what you expect with the first seed against the second seed in the group, you always expect a big game and a big win, but there's teams still to go. One bad game can always set you back so we will stay focused and grounded.

"That's what we are trying to build. I said to the players, 'look - that's what it means to the country if you can produce a big result against one of the top teams in Europe - people will speak about you in years to come."
