A welterweight contender bout is targeted for the UFC’s June pay-per-view event.
At UFC 289, Stephen Thompson (17-6-1 MMA, 12-6-1 UFC) and Michel Pereira (28-11 MMA, 6-2 UFC) will square off in a three-round bout. The event takes place June 10. While no official announcement has been made, the card is expected to be in Canada.
A person with knowledge of the matchup recently confirmed the targeted booking Tuesday to MMA Junkie but asked to remain anonymous as the promotion has yet to make an official announcement. Additionally, Pereira previously confirmed the bout on Instagram. MMA Sucka first reported the matchup.
Thompson, 40, looks to continue his winning ways after a hard-fought victory over Kevin Holland in December. The victory snapped a two-fight skid for “Wonderboy”.
Pereira, 29, rides a five-fight winning streak into the matchup. Victories over that stretch include Zelim Imadaev, Khaos Williams, Niko Price, Andre Fialho, and most recently Santiago Ponzinibbio.
With the addition, the UFC 289 lineup includes:
- Stephen Thompson vs. Michel Pereira
- Jasmine Jasudavicius vs. Miranda Maverick
- Eryk Anders vs. Marc-Andre Barriault
- Diana Belbita vs. Maria Oliveira
- Blake Bilder vs. Kyle Nelson
- David Dvorak vs. Matt Schnell
- Dan Ige vs. Nate Landwehr
