Stephen Robinson pleased with St Mirren creativity despite heavy Rangers defeat

Rangers 4 St Mirren 0

Stephen Robinson refused to stick the boot into his players despite their heavy defeat in Govan.

The Buddies created numerous chances to get on the scoresheet themselves before leaving Glasgow empty-handed.

The St Mirren boss was pleased with his side’s creativity but admitted their sloppiness at the back and in front of goal ultimately cost them dearly.

Robinson told Renfrewshire Live Sport: “It might sound daft to say it wasn’t a 4-0, but at key moments the game went against us.

“It isn’t often you come to Ibrox and get two one-v-ones.

“Mark O’Hara forced a great save from Allan McGregor, who also produced one from Alex Grieve in the first half.

“Curtis Main hit the bar, Marcus Fraser had a chance in the box in acres of space and he should have made a better decision.

“So from middle to front, there were really good aspects to our play.

“But when you’re playing against a team of this calibre you get punished for mistakes.

“There are things we can improve on but it’s difficult to be critical of the players.”

Gio van Bronckhorst meanwhile was delighted with star striker Antonio Colak’s blistering start to Saturday's clash.

The in-form forward took just four minutes to find the net, adding a sublime second later in the game to take his early tally to 13 for the season.

Gers boss van Bronckhorst hopes the Croatian hitman can keep up his blistering form ahead of the Glasgow side’s Champions League clash with Liverpool on Wednesday.

Van Bronckhorst said: “We showed our intention right from the start and wanted to get the first goal in the game.

“We started really well and got the goal from Antonio. We wanted him to have a good start at the club.

“He had to perform really well from the beginning which he has done.

“I’m very happy with his performances and all he has to do now is continue that.

“We kept our energy right until the end.”
