Stephen O’Donnell signs new two-year deal at Motherwell

Stephen O’Donnell will extend his time at Motherwell after signing a new deal until 2026.

The 32-year-old right-back moved to Fir Park in 2020 but was due to run out of contract this summer.

O’Donnell, with 26 Scotland caps to his name, is delighted to have reached an agreement to remain with the club for the next two seasons.

“This club means a lot to me,” O’Donnell told the Well website. “I live locally and I’m very proud to represent a club that is a pillar in the community.

“Extending my contract is a delight. I’ve loved my time here and frankly didn’t want it to end.

“I will continue to give my all for the badge and give it my everything.”

O’Donnell has made 147 appearances for Motherwell and manager Stuart Kettlewell is pleased to have retained the experienced former Partick Thistle, Luton and Kilmarnock player.

“Stephen is an excellent professional,” said Kettlewell. “From availability to a high standards shown in training, he is a role model for young players.

“In my time here, he has been tremendous. Last season, he was asked to play in a number of positions but applied himself impeccably.

“It’s another player signed up early which is something I’ve been wanting to do.”

O’Donnell follows Sam Nicholson and Paul McGinn in agreeing a new contract since the end of the season, while the club said in a recent squad update that they remained in negotiations with Matty Connelly, Bevis Mugabi and Callum Slattery.

Meanwhile, Derek Adams has made another shock return to a former club - this time it's Morecambe.

The highly experienced coach infamously re-joined Ross County for a third stint in charge of the Staggies last season in November. He left Morecambe to take over in the Highlands.

However, Adams lasted just 79 days after an ill-fated spell in Dingwall, as he quit with the club badly struggling in the Scottish Premiership.
