Stephen Ireland says Thierry Henry's handball will bring an 'edge' to Ireland v France

Stephen Ireland claimed there will always be an 'edge' between Ireland and France following Thierry Henry's 'disgraceful' handball in 2009.

The former Republic of Ireland midfielder reflected on Stephen Kenny's team ahead of kickoff, as they prepare to face the two-time World Cup winners at the Aviva Stadium.

Ireland labeled Henry's handball as "an absolute disaster" for the Irish, who had fought valiantly to bring the World Cup playoff into extra time in 2009.

"I think it was something that was an absolute disaster, it’s an incredibly unique story and it is always fresh in people’s minds," Ireland told BoyleSports while speaking about Euro 2024 Odds.

"It feels as well like they create these narratives around the games, but rightly so - it was an absolute disgrace! An absolute farce, absolute heartache for everybody - it’s always fresh in people’s minds.

"It brings a bit more of an edge to the game, it makes it more competitive because the media will always bring it up and that filters through to the team."

Ireland claimed the country needs the national team to reach a major tournament, as it brings a "togetherness" to the nation.

"It’s vital and the entire country is crying out for it. There is always heartbreak when the team doesn’t make it to a tournament, they always seem to be a bit closer and there or thereabouts with it," Ireland added.

"The country needs it, they’re desperate for it and craving it. It’ll be great if they can do it, because when they are there, the country becomes an absolute party and it creates a real togetherness within the country."
