We should all know fairly quickly once free agency starts who the Pittsburgh Steelers need to target early in the 2023 NFL draft. Offensive tackle is a prime candidate to be the team’s top draft need and this is the direction NFL.com draft analyst Daniel Jeremiah put out his second mock draft of the offseason and gave the Steelers an offensive tackle some might not have thought of.
Jeremiah opted for Tennessee offensive tackle Darnell Wright at No. 17 to the Steelers. Wright can certainly make a case to be the third offensive tackle off the board with guys like Anton Harris, Peter Skoronski and Dawand Jones. All solid players but it feels like a reach to take any of those guys at No. 17. The scouting combine could help separate these guys out.
In this scenario, with Broderick Jones and Paris Johnson off the board, it feels like a perfect opportunity to trade back, stockpile some picks and still get a similar level of player if offensive tackle is the target. With former Florida quarterback Anthony Richardson Jr. still available, some team is going to pay for that No. 17 pick so they can take him ahead of the Detroit Lions.
