One of the Pittsburgh Steelers top free agents is wide receiver Steven Sims Jr. Sims is a restricted free agent who emerged last season in the return game and as the team’s No. 3 receiver after Pittsburgh traded Chase Claypool. But it is now late March, the Steelers didn’t tender Sims and it seems they are going to let him move on in free agency.
Without Sims on the roster, the next man up may just be Calvin Austin III. Austin missed all of his rookie season in 2022 with a foot injury after being the team’s fourth-round pick. Austin was drafted because he has game-breaking speed. Austin ran a 4.32-second 40-yard dash at the 2022 scouting combine that was third-best among wide receivers.
If the Steelers don’t bring Sims back, don’t be shocked if they hedge their bets by either drafting one or signing a veteran to provide depth. Nevertheless, we are excited to see the added dimension Austin can bring to this offense with his ability to pull the top off a secondary.
